What is Pilates and How Can it Help Me?

Pilates is a movement system developed in the early 20th century by movement genius, Joseph H. Pilates. Joe believed that in order to achieve good health and happiness, “man’s inherited birth right”, the whole being must be addressed. This became the guiding principle of his work which he called Contrology and defined as “a comprehensive integration of body, mind and spirit”.

The Pilates system is made up of a unique set of exercises sequenced in such a way that one can achieve a balanced workout that “uniformly develops the body, corrects wrong posture, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit”.

The Pilates exercises can be performed on the floor as Mat Pilates, or on specifically designed corrective equipment in a Studio or Clinical Pilates class. The equipment, such as the Universal Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair, use heavy springs for resistance and improved proprioceptive

feedback to provide support or challenge depending on the focus of the movement.

Joe’s background in gymnastics, martial arts, acrobatics, yoga and body building are obvious influences in his work, but its his keen analytical approach to body mechanics, posture, methodical progressions and correct breathing techniques that has made the method unique.

Additional, yet less often talked about elements of the Pilate method, such mindfulness, personal hygiene, correct walking techniques, beneficial exposure to sun and fresh air, sleep behaviour, diet and a strong moral code of behaviour has ensured this method remains astoundingly relevant as a whole body wellness program, even to this day.

Clinical and Studio Pilates

We offer both Clinical and Studio Pilates at our New Farm location. The basis of both programs is almost identical in terms of the Pilates exercises, potential sequences and equipment however, our Clinical Pilates classes focus more on post-acute illness or injuries recovery, or overcoming complex movement and health issues.

Our Studio classes are a great place to continue if you are post-recovery and ready to move on from your Clinical classes, or if you are already relatively injury-free and want to start a movement/fitness program to gain that competitive edge on everyone around you!

Whatever stage you are at we can offer you Pilates classes to meet your movement needs now, whether that be injury recovery, pre or post pregnancy fitness, elite performance training, or simply moving for general wellbeing and longevity. All classes are 60 minutes in duration.

A Little More on Clinical Pilates

It can be a little scary starting a movement program post injury or if you are returning from surgery or a serious illness, and we understand you may feel vulnerable about your recovery, but rest assured we are here to make your movement journey a positive one and even enjoyable! The popularity of Pilates in a clinical settings is because;

  • It focuses on control and precision of movement to promote healing, strength and mobility.
  • It allows the opportunity for correction and repatterining of poor movement habits it consists of low numbers of thoughtful repetitions to avoid pain and undesirable reinforcement of poor movement patterns
  • It consists of methodical progressions, within each exercise and within the sequences as a whole to foster change and growth without risking injury
  • It has a powerful calming effect on the mind
  • It enables patients to move from acute injury recovery all the way to a high level fitness and performance programs
  • It provides a positive, pain-free movement experience that can exceed the patient’s expectations and promotes healing, confidence and happiness.

Our Clinical Pilates classes are taught by appropriately Pilates trained manual therapists, such as an Osteopath, Exercise Physiologist or  a professional Pilates teacher with advanced training.

A Clinical Pilates program commences with a one-on-one Initial Consultation where your teacher will take some time to discuss your issues and concerns with you prior to commencing with some gentle pre-Pilates or specific rehab type exercises. If you have been referred from another MOVE practitioner your teacher may have already consulted them (with your consent) to ensure continuity of treatment with the aim to return you to normal daily functions as quickly as appropriate.

Typically Clinical Pilates sessions continue as private classes to ensure movements remain focused, precise and controlled, and allow plenty of opportunities for feedback and consultation of how the movement and overall session is feeling. The total number of private classes required to reach a satisfactory level of recovery varies greatly from person to person depending on type and severity of injury, commitment to weekly sessions and other individual factors.

Consistency is key in this type of training and we recommend regular weekly sessions from one to three times per week. Your teacher will continue to liaise with your manual therapist to ensure your journey is a positive, pain-free experience to get you back on your feet as soon as possible. Once you have reached this milestone we recommend you continue your Pilates training in one of our Studio Pilates classes where you will continue to be guided under the watchful eye of professional Pilates teachers, in a small group environment with a maximum of three students where you will gain further strength and mobility whilst enjoying the full Pilates experience.

A Little More on Studio Pilates

Our Studio Pilates classes are taught by professional Pilates teachers with a minimum of a Diploma of Pilates qualifications. Some of our studio teachers may also have advanced training and training in specialist fields. You may even find a manual therapists or two who also teach Studio Pilates class. We have hand picked our teachers to ensure we have the best teachers Brisbane has to offer, and their passion and dedication to sharing the method makes for enjoyable and powerfully effective classes suitable for all levels.

Our Studio Pilates classes are conducted in small groups of up to three students only. We have purposefully designed our classes to be small so that we can achieve better results for our students, allowing the teacher to spend ample time with each one to make the appropriate corrections, but still enabling the student some time to work independently and at their own pace.

As with our Clinical Pilates classes our Studio classes are conducted in a way to ensure;

  • All exercises are performed with precision and control
  • Poor movement patterns are corrected quickly to prevent bad habits from forming.
  • Repetitions are maintain at the appropriate number to maintain correct muscle recruitment patterns for maximum benefit.
  • Exercises and overall programs are appropriately progressed over time for maximum growth with minimum risk of injury, moving seamlessly from the beginner to advanced repertoire.
  • A mindful movement practice is maintained at all times for physical wellbeing, mental stillness and spiritual peace.
  • Positive, pain-free movement experiences that can exceed the student’s expectations and promotes supreme wellbeing and happiness!

How do I book a class?

For new clients, Initial Consultations and Follow Up Consultations are booked through our Studio Manager who can be contacted on 0498 531 550 or at erica@moveosteopathy.com.au

For clients who have already undergone an induction, private and trio classes may be booked online through our website. If you are having any troubles with this do not hesitate to call the clinic for assistance on 38540087

What happens if I need to cancel or want to reschedule my Pilates class?

It is no problem to cancel or reschedule a class but we do have a late cancellation policy which will apply if you have to cancel or reschedule a class with the 24 hour window prior to your class start time and full class fee will be charged. We appreciate your understating and cooperation with this policy as we have limited places available and from the time you book your class that spot is held exclusively for you and becomes unavailable for anyone else to access. Should you need to cancel please give as much notice as possible so that your spot can be made available again to others, and our team will help find you another suitable class in the same or following week to ensure you continue to progress in your Pilates training.

What should I wear to Pilates?

We recommend comfortable close-fitting active wear. Pilates teachers focus on correct technique and precision of movement so it is important for them to see the way the body is moving. Socks are essential for the Pilates studio and must be worn for hygiene reasons, sock with grip on the underside are highly recommended and can be purchased for low cost at the clinic. We also recommend that you bring a towel and water bottle.

Is there somewhere safe I can leave my personal belongings during class?

Yes, we have a storage unit in the studio where your belongings will be safe and within your field of vision.

Can I claim my Pilates session with my health fund?

Depending on your level of cover and the qualifications of your teacher you may be able to claim Pilates services from your private health insurer but this is not guaranteed as every health care provider is different. Please check with our team and they can advise.

How long will it take before I get results?

Joseph Pilates had a famous saying, “in 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference, in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body”. If you are doing two or more Pilates classes per week will experiences changes quite quickly and will certainly feel the differences in the first 10-12 sessions. Even if you come only once per week you will progress but obviously more slowly and we consider one session per week to be more for maintenance as opposed to change and growth.

I have a bad back/shoulder/hip/knee, is Pilates safe for me?

Absolutely! Pilates is an ideal form of movement for the recovery and strengthening of a whole range of injuries and movement issues. If you are in pain we do recommend you see one of our Osteopaths first for a diagnosis and treatment and to determine whether it is appropriate to start a Pilates program straight away or if you should rest and allow some recovery first. Once you are given clearance to start a Pilates program your Osteopath will consult with your Pilates teacher to ensure your program is specifically designed to meet your needs.

Can I lose weight doing Pilates?

Yes, Pilates is an excellent way to support weight loss. Just like almost any other movement practice Piates will contribute to weight lose and because it does not place extraneous stress on the body it is good even for people with painful joints.

Is Pilates the same as yoga?

Some exercises may be similar to Yoga movements however the principles and cuing are generally different. Very few Yoga styles incorporate the deep core work used in the Pilates method and the breathing techniques are different. The Pilates work performed on Pilates equipment, such as the Reformer, is very different to yoga, as the use of springs is employed to create added resistance.

Can I combine Pilates with other exercise programs?

Yes, Pilates is a fantastic complimentary practice for so many other movement practices and sports. In fact, because of its focus on core strengthening and whole body strength and flexibility, Pilates is a popular cross-training method for almost all movers and athletes especially runners, cyclists, dancers, gymnastic, golfers, swimmers, footballers, martial artists and so on.

After having children, I had a fair amount of back pain caused by the stress of the pregnancies on my body. I became more aware of my posture and soon discovered how Pilates can increase core strength and flexibility.

After much study and development, I gained a Diploma in Pilates and have been instructing since 2013. I am passionate about Pilates and people and committed to each individual and their needs. I love my work and am highly dedicated to providing the most from my instruction.

I work with clients to develop training programs to incorporate appropriate breathing patterns and techniques to ensure optimal performance of every movement. In this way we can achieve fitness goals to obtain maximum body control, balance, mental wellness and strength.

I have treated clients suffering from a variety of conditions, including scoliosis, back pain and shoulder injury.

Erica is clearly excited about movement and has made it her career to share and teach fun, effective and practical ways to move through Pilates and yoga. Erica has been teaching movement for over 25 years and has completed training with Pilates International, Polestar Pilates and Romana Pilates training centres. She is also a qualified yoga teacher and fitness trainer.

Erica discovered Pilates when she was working as an Ambulance Paramedic. She loved the method so much that she decided to change careers and, as they say, the rest was history. Erica found that teaching Pilates very a natural career progression for her and great way to consolidate all her previous knowledge and skills to offer her students the very best movement and wellbeing outcomes.

Her teaching style focuses on precise technique with a nurturing attitude, understanding that many people join a Pilates or yoga class due to injury rehab, movement deficits or returning to exercise post illness,
